Preparing a successful application for skilled visa sponsorship

The following shows the steps and information required to apply for Victorian Government sponsorship for the Skilled – Regional Sponsored (475 and 487) visas.

  • In order to complete the application form for visa sponsorship, a range of information and documentation is required. See the documentation checklist.
  • You should only begin an online application form when you are ready with all the information you need, as you will only have 30 days to complete the application.

Step 4 – Apply for visa sponsorship

  • You can apply online for the Skilled - Regional Sponsored (475 and 487) visas from Apply for Visa Sponsorship. Make sure you include all relevant documentation with your online application.
  • Once you have submitted your application, you will be sent an email within two business days confirming that it has been received. The standard processing time is up to eight weeks.
  • You may only submit one application form for the Skilled – Regional Sponsored (475 and 487) visas in a six month period.

Occupation restrictions

General Medical Practitioners (ASCO Code 2311-11) are excluded from Victorian State sponsorship under the Skilled - Regional Sponsored visa due to restrictive registration requirements by the Australian Medical Council. For more information, visit the DIAC website.

Purchasing private health insurance

Skilled – Regional Sponsored (475 and 487) visa holders are not entitled to receive public health benefits. The Skilled and Business Migration Program requires applicants to purchase private health insurance prior to arrival in Victoria. The following is a list of some large health insurers that have options available for Temporary Residents such as Skilled – Regional Sponsored visa holders. Other providers are available so you should research your options to ensure that you find a reputable service that is appropriate for you and your family.

Entitlements and assistance

On arrival, Victorian Government sponsored Skilled – Regional Sponsored visa holders will be linked with local coordinators in the Victorian region specified in their application. The Victorian Government offers industry seminars for eligible skilled migrants, but is not responsible for finding Skilled Regional – Sponsored visa holders employment.
