Victoria's skilled migration strategy

The Premier of Victoria, John Brumby, and the Minister for Skills and Workforce Participation, Jacinta Allan, released the next stage of the Victorian Government's Skilled Migration Strategy, Global Skills for Victoria, in October 2007.

Global Skills for Victoria sets out Victoria's strategy for attracting skilled and business migrants to Victoria, particularly its regional areas.

Initiatives under Global Skills for Victoria focus on attracting highly skilled professionals, tradespeople, business owners and investors to Victoria and ensuring that they settle in well and contribute to their full potential.

Global skills for Provincial Victoria

A key part of Global Skills for Victoria is Global Skills for Provincial Victoria (GSPV), a $3.96 million initiative to link regional employers to suitable migrants. Funding also helps the regions provide services to help skilled and business migrants and their families settle into work and life in regional Victoria.

Services for migrants

Services are available to recently arrived skilled migrants, who hold a permanent residency or temporary (pending permanent) General Skilled Migration visa, including Skilled-Graduate (subclass 485) visa holders. Recently arrived migrants falling under other categories may also be eligible for assistance, subject to their qualifications and willingness to seek employment in regional Victoria.

Locally based regional migration coordinators offer these services to help connect migrants with information about employment opportunities, occupational language and work preparation training, and post-employment support. Services vary across regions and may include:

  • welcome packs providing information on banking and finance, council services, education, employment, health, housing and recreation
  • links to networks of business and community contacts
  • links to multicultural associations
  • letters of support for real estate and employment.

Regional migration coordinators are available in the following 10 Victorian regional areas:
