Registered Nurse - Assessment Information Sheet

To have your skills and qualifications assessed to Australian standards you will need to go through the following steps:

  1. Assessment procedure
  2. Supporting documents
  3. Send in your application form
  4. Checklist

1. Assessment procedure

The Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) has nominated the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council (ANMC) as the assessing authority for the occupation of Registered Nurse.

In conducting an assessment, the following factors will be considered:

  • completed nursing education program leading to registration
  • work experience
  • English language competency
  • national competency standards (as assessed by the ANMC).

Competency requirements

Some nursing and midwifery qualifications may meet the requirements for migration and will not be required by the ANMC to undertake a competency program. Alternately, you may be required to complete a Competency-based Assessment.

The ANMC has developed a booklet on Competency-based Assessments for Internationally Qualified Nurses and Midwives (PDF - 189KB). This booklet has been prepared to help overseas nurses and midwives who have their qualifications assessed by the ANMC, and are required to undertake a competency program before being eligible for migration.

For further information on the ANMC pre-migration skills assessment requirements including an application form and competency standards, please contact:

2. Supporting documents

As part of your ANMC skills assessment you will also be required to provide supporting documentation. The required documents are listed on the assessment application form and include:

  • certified copy of formal degree/diploma or certificate
  • certified copy of your academic transcripts
  • brief curriculum vitae.

All documentation must be certified true copies. Note that the name, status and address of the person certifying the copy must be clearly evident. Wherever possible, an official stamp should accompany their signature.

Make sure you keep a copy of these documents for your personal records as you may need them for employment purposes.

3. Send in your application form

Send your application form to the ANMC with the required documentation and assessment fee.

Once your application, supporting documents and assessment fees have been received the assessment process can commence.

The ANMC will then send you a written statement indicating that your skills either meet or do not meet the Australian requirements to migrate as a Registered Nurse.

If your assessment advises that you meet the requirements, you can submit this statement with your DIAC visa application.
