Education Industry
Overview
As well as being a significant source of jobs and current economic growth, the quality of Victoria’s education system is crucial to the state’s future economic competitiveness nationally and internationally.
Victoria’s education industry includes:
- the early childhood education and care sector (pre-school age)
- the primary school sector (children aged 5-6 to 11-12)
- the secondary school sector (children aged 11-12 to 17-18)
- the tertiary education sector (including university and vocational studies post-school).
Industry size
Victoria invests heavily in education. In 2006-07 the Victorian Government spent $5.3 billion on education, which included:
- A$290 million on early childhood education and care
- A$3.98 billion on school education
- A$938 million on post-school education.
In February 2008, there were 132,800 full-time workers in Victoria’s education industry.
In 2007, Victoria’s Teacher Supply and Demand Reference Group forecast that an average of 3290 new teachers will be needed for Victorian schools each year leading up to 2012. The supply of these teachers includes local graduates and recruits, as well as skilled migrants.
Occupations
Victoria is currently offering visa sponsorship to applicants with the following education qualifications:
- Pre-primary School Teacher (Kindergarten/Early Childhood)
- Qualification must include practicum and theory from birth to five years
- Secondary School Teacher
- Mathematics
- Technology (Metal, Wood or Automotive)
- LOTE (Chinese, Korean, Indonesian, Japanese, German or French).
