Health - Nursing Sector

Overview

Victoria’s nursing sector includes a number of occupations – including registered nurses, midwives, and mental health nurses. Nurses are employed in:

  • public hospitals
  • private hospitals
  • residential aged care facilities
  • community and domiciliary nursing
  • mental health facilities
  • large medical centres and doctors rooms
  • private practice.

In Victoria, nurses work as full-time, part-time or casual employees, on fixed-term contracts, and through agencies on short-term placements.

Industry size

According to Victoria’s Nursing in Victoria website, more than 80,000 nurses are currently registered in Victoria. A nursing sector workforce projection completed in 2003 indicates that demand for qualified nurses in Victoria is growing, in part because the state’s ageing population means that nurses are retiring, and the rest of the population requires more medical care.
