Biomedical Engineer Career Information

The Victorian Government’s $637.6 million Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) Initiative represents the largest sustained investment in STI by an Australian State Government1.

As at 31 December 2008, 48 Victorian life science companies were listed on the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX), with a combined market capitalisation of around $22.7 billion. In the 2007/08 financial year, listed life science companies in Victoria generated sales in excess of $7.2 billion2.

 Biomedical engineers apply specialist scientific and technical skills to address problems in biology and the treatment and prevention of human disease.

Earning potential

According to the Australian Government’s Job Search website, average gross weekly wages for other engineering professionals, including biomedical engineers, are approximately AUD $17303.

Licensing and registration

There are no licensing or registration requirements for biomedical engineers working in Victoria.

Employers

Biomedical engineers are employed by private companies in the creation of medical instruments for the development of medical technology. They may be employed by government, hospitals and universities or work independently as consultants.

Biomedical engineering professionals are employed across several industries including: Professional, Scientific and Technical Services; Manufacturing; Transport, Postal and Warehousing; and Electricity, Gas, Water and Waste Services4.
